Most teachers recognise the need for the students’ awareness about the potential relevance and utility of the language and skills they are teaching. And researchers have confirmed the importance of this need.

In ESP (English for specific purposes) materials, for example, it is relatively easy to convince the learners that the teaching points are relevant and useful by relating them to known learner interests and to ‘real-life’ tasks, which the learners need or might need to perform in the target language. In general English materials this is obviously more difficult; but it can be achieved by researching what the target learners are interested in and what they really want to learn the language for. An interesting example of such research was a questionnaire in Namibia which revealed that two of the most important reasons for secondary school students to wish to learn English were so they would be able to write love letters in English and so that they would be able to write letters of complaint for villagers to the village headman and from the village headman to local authorities.

Perception of relevance and utility can also be achieved by relating teaching points to challenging classroom tasks and by presenting them in ways which could facilitate the achievement of the task outcomes desired by the learners. The ‘new’ learning points are not relevant and useful because they will help the learners to achieve longterm academic or career objectives, but because they could help the learners to achieve short-term task objectives now. Of course, this only works if the tasks are begun first and the teaching is then provided in response to discovered needs. This is much more difficult for the materials writer than the conventional approach of teaching a predetermined point first and then getting the learners to practise and then produce it.

📊 Revisão da questão

🔎 Evidência textual e operação linguística

A questão solicita identificar qual verbo modal expressa substantial certainty — um grau elevado de certeza ou confiança na realização do evento mencionado.

A evidência decisiva aparece na alternativa B:

“because they will help the learners to achieve longterm academic or career objectives.”

B — COMPROMETIMENTO ASSERTIVO ELEVADO
SUBSTANTIAL CERTAINTY
WILL
“will help the learners”

O enunciador apresenta o resultado futuro como esperado com elevado grau de confiança.

A — WOULD
“would be able to write”

Capacidade pretendida em uma finalidade expressa sob perspectiva passada.

C — CAN
“it can be achieved”

Possibilidade ou capacidade de realização, sem previsão assertiva equivalente a will.

D — COULD
“could facilitate”

Possibilidade de facilitar determinado resultado, sem afirmá-lo como esperado.

E — MIGHT
“might need to perform”

Possibilidade incerta de que determinada necessidade venha a existir.

CHAVE DE INTERPRETAÇÃO
WILL → PREVISÃO FUTURA COM ELEVADA CONFIANÇA

O contexto determina o valor do modal. Certeza substancial não equivale a garantia absoluta.

Precisão semântica: will não garante a realização do evento, mas, na formulação apresentada, expressa maior comprometimento com a previsão futura. Os demais modais não devem ser interpretados como graus fixos de uma escala única, independentemente do contexto.

🟢 GABARITO VERDÃO — B

because they will help the learners to achieve longterm academic or career objectives. (paragraph 3)

O modal will apresenta a ajuda futura aos aprendizes com elevado grau de confiança, correspondendo à ideia de substantial certainty.

🧠 Régua das 7 Inteligências Cognitivas

01 — Localização: identificar os verbos modais destacados nas cinco alternativas e seus contextos.

02 — Vocabulário: reconhecer os valores contextuais de will, would, can, could e might.

03 — Paráfrase: relacionar substantial certainty à previsão expressa com elevado grau de confiança.

04 — Escopo: distinguir certeza, possibilidade, capacidade e perspectiva temporal.

05 — Evidência: confirmar o valor modal de will na afirmação sobre os objetivos acadêmicos e profissionais.

06 — Controle inferencial: evitar equiparar possibilidade à certeza ou interpretar certeza substancial como garantia absoluta.

07 — Decisão: selecionar B pelo maior comprometimento assertivo expresso pelo modal no contexto.

📝 Análise das alternativas (Mapeamento dos Valores Modais)

A) so they would be able to write love letters in English. (paragraph 2)

Valor modal: Would — perspectiva futura a partir do passado, em contexto de finalidade.

A construção would be able to write expressa a capacidade que os estudantes desejavam adquirir para escrever cartas de amor. O modal aparece vinculado à finalidade relatada sob uma perspectiva passada, e não como uma previsão direta de elevado grau de certeza equivalente à expressa por will na alternativa B.

B) because they will help the learners to achieve longterm academic or career objectives. (paragraph 3) ✓

Valor modal: Will — previsão futura com certeza substancial.

O modal will apresenta a contribuição futura dos conteúdos de aprendizagem como um resultado esperado com elevado grau de confiança. A formulação expressa comprometimento assertivo superior ao das alternativas que indicam possibilidade ou capacidade, satisfazendo o critério de substantial certainty solicitado pela banca.

C) but it can be achieved by researching what the target learners are interested in. (paragraph 2)

Valor modal: Can — possibilidade ou capacidade de realização.

A construção can be achieved afirma que determinado resultado é possível ou alcançável. Isso não equivale a prever, com elevado comprometimento assertivo, que o resultado efetivamente ocorrerá.

◈ DETECTOR SEMÂNTICO — POSSIBILIDADE × CERTEZA SUBSTANCIAL

A diferença decisiva não é simplesmente o tempo futuro, mas o grau de comprometimento do enunciador com a realização do evento.

⚠️ ALTERNATIVA C — CAN
“it can be achieved”

O resultado é apresentado como possível ou realizável.

POSSIBILIDADE NÃO É PREVISÃO ASSERTIVA
⚙️ ALTERNATIVA B — WILL
“they will help the learners”

O resultado é apresentado como esperado com elevado grau de confiança.

PREVISÃO COM COMPROMETIMENTO ASSERTIVO
Diagnóstico decisivo: can indica que algo pode ser realizado; will, nesta passagem, apresenta a realização futura como uma previsão assumida com confiança. Nenhuma das duas construções constitui garantia absoluta.

D) ways which could facilitate the achievement of the task outcomes desired by the learners. (paragraph 3)

Valor modal: Could — possibilidade de realização.

A expressão could facilitate indica que determinados procedimentos poderiam facilitar o alcance dos resultados desejados. O enunciador apresenta uma possibilidade, sem assumir que a facilitação necessariamente ocorrerá ou que seja uma previsão formulada com certeza substancial.

E) ‘real-life’ tasks, which the learners need or might need to perform in the target language. (paragraph 2)

Valor modal: Might — possibilidade incerta.

Armadilha central: confundir possibilidade ou capacidade, expressas por can, could e might, com a certeza substancial associada à previsão formulada com will.
