📝 Grammar in Context | 26. Inversion (Negative Inversion & Locative Inversion) | 11. Education
English spelling is ridiculous. Sew and new don’t rhyme. Kernel and colonel do. When you see an ough, you might need to read it out as ‘aw’ (thought), ‘ow’ (drought), ‘uff’ (tough), ‘off’ (cough), ‘oo’ (through), or ‘oh’ (though). The ea vowel is usually pronounced ‘ee’ (weak, please, seal, beam) but can also be ‘eh’ (bread, head, wealth, feather). Those two options cover most of it – except for a handful of cases, where it’s ‘ay’ (break, steak, great). Oh wait, one more… there’s earth. No wait, there’s also heart.
The English spelling system, if you can even call it a system, is full of this kind of thing. Yet __(I)__ do most people raised with English learn to read and write it; millions of people who weren’t raised with English learn to use it too, to a very high level of accuracy.
Admittedly, for a non-native speaker, such mastery usually involves a great deal of confusion and frustration. Part of the problem is that English spelling looks deceptively similar to other languages that use the same alphabet but in a much more consistent way. You can __(II)__ an afternoon familiarising yourself with the pronunciation rules of Italian, Spanish, German, Swedish, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Polish and many others, and credibly read out a text in that language, even if you __(III)__ it. Your pronunciation might be terrible, and the pace, stress and rhythm would be completely off, and no one would mistake you for a native speaker – but you __(IV)__ it.

ENUNCIADO & RESPOSTA
Preenche corretamente a lacuna I em Yet __(I)__ do most people raised with English learn to read and write it; é:
A
rather than
B
even though
C
not only
D
provided that
E
as long as
🔎 Leitura Orientada
A pista decisiva está na estrutura verbal já presente na oração:
do most people learn
A ordem normal seria:
most people learn
Entretanto, o texto apresenta:
not only + do + subject + base verb
A expressão not only, quando colocada no início da oração com função de focalização restritiva, desencadeia a inversão entre auxiliar e sujeito.

Portanto:
Yet not only do most people learn to read and write it...
A presença de do antes de most people é justamente o sinal estrutural que conduz ao gabarito.
🟢 GABARITO VERDÃO: (C) not only
A alternativa not only completa corretamente a estrutura Not only do most people learn..., na qual o deslocamento de not only para a posição inicial provoca a inversão auxiliar + sujeito.
🧠 Régua das 7 Inteligências Cognitivas:

01. Comando: preencher corretamente a lacuna I.
02. Gatilho: do most people learn.
03. Operação: reconhecer a inversão auxiliar–sujeito.
04. Evidência: do aparece antes de most people.
05. Regra: Not only + auxiliary + subject + base verb.
06. Exclusão: os demais conectores não licenciam essa inversão nessa estrutura.
07. Decisão: (C) not only.
📝 Análise das alternativas (Mapeamento de Restrições Sintático-Regenciais)
(A) rather than

❌ Distrator — Comparative/Alternative Connector Mismatch.
Rather than estabelece relação de alternativa, preferência ou contraste, mas não desencadeia a inversão auxiliar–sujeito observada em do most people learn.
(B) even though

❌ Distrator — Concessive Connector Mismatch.
Even though é uma conjunção concessiva. Sua presença não explica a inversão apresentada. A construção esperada seria uma oração com ordem regular, e não do most people learn.
(C) not only

✅ CORRETA — Negative/Restrictive Fronting — `Not Only` Inversion.
Not only, deslocado para a posição inicial, licencia a inversão em Not only do most people learn.... O auxiliar do precede o sujeito most people, exatamente como exige a estrutura.
(D) provided that

❌ Distrator — Conditional Connector Mismatch.
Provided that introduz uma condição. Não é o elemento responsável pela inversão auxiliar–sujeito e não justifica a sequência do most people learn.
(E) as long as

❌ Distrator — Conditional Connector Mismatch.
As long as introduz uma condição ou ressalva temporal/condicional, mantendo a ordem oracional regular. Não licencia a inversão presente em do most people learn.
📌 Resumo B3GE™
O ponto decisivo da questão não é simplesmente o significado dos conectores. A FCC fornece uma pista sintática explícita:
do + most people + learn
Essa inversão exige um elemento que, quando anteposto, possa desencadeá-la. A construção correspondente é:
Not only do most people learn...
Assim, a resolução pode ser reduzida à cadeia:
inversão → do most people learn → fronting de not only → (C)
