Corpus linguistics can best be defined as a linguistic methodology which is founded on the use of electronic collections of naturally occurring texts, viz. corpora. It is neither a new branch of linguistics __(28)__ a new theory of language, but the very nature of the evidence it uses makes it a particularly powerful methodology, one __(29)__ has the potential to change perspectives on language. For Leech (1992:106) it is a “new research enterprise, [...] a new philosophical approach to the subject, [...] an ´open sesame´ to a new way of thinking about language.”
The power of computer software tools combined with the impressive amount and diversity of the language data used as evidence has revealed and will continue to reveal previously unsuspected linguistic phenomena.
For Stubbs (1996:232) “the heuristic power of corpus methods is no longer in doubt.” Corpus linguistics has contributed to the discovery of new facts which “ __(30)__ to far-reaching new hypotheses about language, for example about the co-selection of lexis and syntax.”
Although corpora are but one source of evidence among many, complementing rather than replacing other data sources such as introspection and elicitation, there is general agreement today that they are “the only reliable source of evidence for such features as frequency” (McEnery & Wilson 1996:12). Frequency is an aspect of language of which we have very little intuitive awareness but one that __(31)__ a major part in many linguistic applications which require a knowledge not only of what is possible in language but what is likely to occur.

Para responder à questão seguinte, considere o texto acima.
The statement that the co-selection of lexis and syntax is a new hypothesis about language implies that
only syntax is actually relevant in the study of language.
lexis has been neglected in the study of language.
syntax and lexis have always been studied together.
lexis and syntax used to be regarded as independent levels of language.
both syntax and lexis were largely ignored in earlier language studies.

The statement that the co-selection of lexis and syntax is a new hypothesis about language implies that
↓
co-selection of lexis and syntax
↓
relação anteriormente não integrada
É exatamente isso que afirma a alternativa (D): lexis and syntax used to be regarded as independent levels of language.
As demais alternativas extrapolam a evidência.
02. Gatilho: “new hypothesis” + “co-selection of lexis and syntax”.
04. Evidência: a co-seleção passa a integrar lexis + syntax.
07. Decisão: selecionar (D) lexis and syntax used to be regarded as independent levels of language.
❌ Distrator — Unsupported Exclusivity.
❌ Distrator — Temporal/Conceptual Reversal.
A alternativa contradiz a ideia de “new hypothesis”.
✅ CORRETA — Implicit Conceptual Inference.
❌ Distrator — Unsupported Generalization.
A alternativa exagera a inferência.
