🔐 Texto de apoio
Learning strategies are defined as “specific actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques—such as seeking out conversation partners, or giving one self-encouragement to tackle a difficult language task—used by students to enhance their own learning. When the learner consciously chooses strategies that suit his or her learning style and the L2 task at hand, these strategies become a useful toolkit for active, conscious, and purposeful self-regulation of learning. Learning strategies can be classified into six types; the compensatory strategies, for example, are those that help the learner make up for missing knowledge.
A given strategy is neither good nor bad; it is neutral until the context of its use is thoroughly considered. What makes a strategy positive and helpful for a given learner? A strategy is useful if the following conditions are present: (a) the strategy relates to the L2 task at hand; (b) the strategy fits the particular student’s learning style preferences to one degree or another; and (c) the student employs the strategy effectivety and links it with other relevant strategies. Strategies that fulfill these conditions “make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferable to new situations” (Oxford 1990, p. 8). Learning strategies can also enable students to become more independent and lifelong learners.

QUESTÃO
It is an example of a compensatory strategy a good reader would resort to while reading an unknown text:
inferring meanings of words and phrases from context.
previewing content to get prepared for the reading.
critical reading for language and content.
reading to arrive at general meanings before reading for details.
resorting to previous knowledge to decide which sub-items to read.
"It is an example of a compensatory strategy a good reader would resort to while reading an unknown text."
(A) ✅ inferring meanings of words and phrases from context.
Correta. Trata-se da estratégia compensatória por excelência: utilizar o contexto para inferir o significado de palavras desconhecidas (guessing intelligently), permitindo que a leitura continue sem interrupções.
(B) ❌ previewing content to get prepared for the reading.
Incorreta. Essa é uma estratégia de pré-leitura (previewing/prediction), não uma estratégia compensatória.
(C) ❌ critical reading for language and content.
Incorreta. A leitura crítica envolve análise e avaliação do texto, não compensação de dificuldades linguísticas.
(D) ❌ reading to arrive at general meanings before reading for details.
Incorreta. A descrição corresponde à estratégia de skimming, cujo objetivo é captar a ideia geral do texto.
(E) ❌ resorting to previous knowledge to decide which sub-items to read.
Incorreta. A ativação de conhecimentos prévios auxilia a compreensão, mas não caracteriza uma Compensation Strategy segundo a classificação de Oxford.
- Compensation Strategies ajudam o aprendiz a superar lacunas linguísticas.
- A principal delas é inferir significados pelo contexto (guessing intelligently).
- Prediction, skimming e critical reading pertencem a outras categorias de estratégias.
Chunk family:
- Compensation strategies (estratégias compensatórias)
- Guess intelligently (inferir inteligentemente)
- Infer meaning from context (inferir significado pelo contexto)
- Unknown words (palavras desconhecidas)
- Reading strategies (estratégias de leitura)
- Context clues (pistas contextuais)
